How does the Ether.fi card work?

Ether.fi Cash is a Visa card that allows you to use cryptocurrencies for real-world purchases, all while keeping your crypto assets deployed in DeFi protocols. Its key differentiator is that it does not function merely as a prepaid card that requires you to load it with cash. It offers two modes of use:

  • Direct Pay: You spend the funds you have deposited.
  • Borrow Mode (credit): You use your crypto assets as collateral to take out loans in stablecoins to pay for your purchases.

This makes the product particularly attractive to those already engaged with Ethereum, staking, lending, and yield-generating strategies within DeFi.

The card is issued by the Visa network and can be used at any establishment that accepts Visa, for both in-person and online purchases. Options include:

  • Purchases at supermarkets and retail stores.
  • Payments at restaurants.
  • Service subscriptions.
  • Hotel reservations.
  • International purchases.
  • Contactless payments (if supported by the card's configuration).

You may request either a virtual or a physical card. The virtual card becomes available once the registration and identity verification process is complete.

Cashback: how much do you get back?

The rewards program is one of the card's main draws. Cashback is paid out in USDC or US dollars. The rates vary based on the membership tier; the entry-level tier offers 3%, though this can go as high as 20% during periodic promotional campaigns—for instance, on spending related to AI services or hotels.

Security: who controls your cryptocurrencies?

This is one of the most interesting aspects and also warrants attention. ether.fi utilizes a non-custodial account structure based on Safe and smart contracts. This means that:

  • Your assets do not function simply as a balance deposited with a centralized exchange.
You use a wallet structure and smart contracts.
  • Assets used as collateral can be supplied to third-party DeFi protocols.
  • Withdrawals are subject to Safe's authorization rules and the liquidity available within the protocols.

However, this does not mean there are no risks. Key risks include:

  • Smart contracts: vulnerabilities in the contracts could lead to losses.
  • Liquidation: in Borrow Mode, a market downturn could compromise your collateral.
  • Interest: borrowing rates are variable and begin to accrue immediately.
  • Stablecoins: USDC and other assets may experience a decline in value or lose their peg.
  • Counterparty and infrastructure: there are risks associated with the lending protocols and the card issuer.

A crucial point to note: the current documentation describes loans facilitated through third-party markets—such as Aave v4—rather than traditional credit granted by a bank.

Conclusion:

Ether.fi is attempting to transform a DeFi wallet into financial infrastructure for everyday life. The card is compelling—not just for its cashback, but primarily because it allows for spending without necessarily having to sell one's crypto assets.

Personally, I find "Direct Pay" to be the simplest and most predictable feature. "Borrow Mode," on the other hand, is the most innovative feature, though it also demands a much higher level of financial control.

As it stands, ether.fi functions more like a global account—one where everyday people, even those unfamiliar with the crypto market, can use crypto in their daily lives without even realizing it, all while benefiting from the tax advantages of the Cayman Islands.
